Meet Our Faculty

PRINCIPAL, CURRIE CAMPUS

Douglas Mansfield has 20 years of professional teaching experience ranging from Kindergarten to adults. He joined Alberta Classical Academy as Associate Principal of the Bridgeland campus in July 2022, before moving to the Currie campus in September 2023. Originally hailing from Newfoundland, Mr. Mansfield has a BFA in Drama and a Bachelor in Education from Memorial University, a Master in Education from the University of Calgary, and a Leadership Quality Standards (LQS) Certification from Ambrose University. He is currently working towards his PhD in philosophy. His interests are in literature, writing, philosophy, theology, drama, history, mythology, fine arts, and outdoor education. Mr. Mansfield’s firm belief is that the primary purpose of education is to liberate the soul from the shackles of ignorance, and that this is best achieved through the authentic search for what is true, good, and beautiful.

PRINCIPAL, BRIDGELAND CAMPUS

Casey Guy holds a B.Tech in Trades and Technology Leadership from Thompson Rivers University and a Bachelor's of Education from Ambrose University. He is currently completing a Master of Arts degree with a concentration in Classical Education from the University of Dallas. His interdisciplinary background in leadership theory and classical pedagogy provides a strong foundation for engaging with the wisdom of the Great Books tradition and applying timeless principles of character formation. Mr. Guy first joined Calgary Classical Academy in our inaugural 2022 school year, where he acquired a reputation for creating harmonious learning environments where students were guided to seek mastery and wisdom. His interests include virtuous leadership theory, classical pedagogy, and Renaissance humanism. In his spare time, Casey enjoys spending time outdoors with his family.

ASSOCIATE PRINCIPAL, CURRIE CAMPUS

Liam Hertzsprung holds an M.Ed in Administration and Leadership from the University of New Brunswick, a B.Ed from the University of Calgary, a B.Mus from Ambrose University, and a diploma in Classical Piano Performance from Mount Royal University. He has several years of experience in classroom teaching, performance, and piano accompaniment. Since joining Calgary Classical Academy in August 2023, Mr. Hertzsprung has been instrumental (pun intended) in developing the school’s middle school music and band program, helping students discover the beauty in great works of classical music while teaching them to create beauty of their own.

ASSOCIATE PRINCIPAL, BRIDGELAND CAMPUS

While having lived his youth in Regina, Saskatchewan, Wayne Ottenbreit has worked professionally in Calgary and in education for almost thirty years, teaching a variety of subjects from grades 7-12. He earned his B.A. (psychology; U of Regina), B.Ed. (social studies, religious studies; U of Regina), and M.Ed. (guidance & counselling; U of Southern Queensland), and is trained as a marriage and family therapist. Wayne believes deeply in education as the passing along of the true, good, and beautiful that human culture has discovered over the ages. He enjoys reading, writing, birding, biking, hiking, and, above all, being with his wife, children, and grandchildren.

VICE-PRINCIPAL, CULTURE
CURRIE CAMPUS

Roxane Bouchard has a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Visual Art and a Bachelor of Education degree from the University of Calgary. Her experiences in education include instructing art and humanities in middle and high school, as well as general classroom teaching in Grades 3 to 6. Mrs. Bouchard believes that art energizes a child’s education, contributes to the development of creativity, and helps the student learn to see the truth and beauty in the world. Mrs. Bouchard loves spending time with her family and friends, especially in the great outdoors.

VICE-PRINCIPAL, ADADEMICS
CURRIE CAMPUS

Originally from Toronto, Kelden Formosa earned his Bachelor of Social Sciences and Bachelor of Education from the University of Ottawa before earning his Master's of Education from the University of Notre Dame in 2017. He has been an elementary school teacher for seven years, including two years teaching grade four in Brownsville, Texas and five years teaching grade five in Vancouver, British Columbia. He enjoys learning about educational theory and policy, and has written about these topics for Canadian policy publications such as The Hub. In his spare time, Mr. Formosa is an avid reader, long-distance hiker, native plant gardener, and cross-country runner.

Kindergarten

Sarah Ali’s passion for teaching was sparked after working with young women in Zanzibar, Tanzania for six months through the International Youth Internship Program. This experience fortified her conviction that everyone can flourish as their best self when given kindness, empathy, and compassion. She holds a Bachelor of Education from St. Mary’s University and a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from Mount Royal University. Ms. Ali has experience teaching in diverse classrooms, both in Calgary and Mexico, in grades ranging from kindergarten to upper elementary. Outside of the classroom, she enjoys fitness, travel, and scoping out new restaurants.

Grade 5 Maths & Sciences

Lionel Alleluia earned his Bachelor’s degrees in English and Education from York University. Mr. Alleluia has fifteen years of professional teaching experience spanning secondary school chaplaincy, theology, English, cooperative education, and elementary education. He believes that an education which promotes goodness, discipline, knowledge, and truth will inevitably lead students to realize their full potential in mind, body, heart, and soul. Mr. Alleluia enjoys reading about Catholic theology, being active outdoors, and spending time with his family.

LATIN TUTOR

Bonnie Allen has been involved in classical education for almost ten years, first homeschooling her own children, then, for the past six years, instructing students in grades 3-12 in Latin as well as English Literature, Grammar, and Composition. Mrs. Allen’s passion for classical education began during her time at Thomas Aquinas College in California, where she received her B.A. in Liberal Arts. Reading and discussing the Great Books at Thomas Aquinas convinced Mrs. Allen of the value of knowledge for its own sake, and instilled in her a desire to spread classical education to others. She particularly enjoys introducing students to the beauty of language, especially Latin.

Sciences

Alejandra Ardin is a passionate educator with a Bachelor of Science in Biology and Chemistry from Mount Royal University and an Honours Bachelor of Education from the University of Calgary. She brings a wealth of experience, having taught from kindergarten to university-level science. Alejandra is deeply committed to nurturing students into well-rounded, virtuous citizens who are inspired by the love of wisdom. Beyond the classroom, she finds joy in music, whether she's singing or playing the cello. A lifelong learner, Alejandra also loves spending quality time with her family, always seeking to grow both personally and professionally.

Grade 4

Jonathan Bolton is a classically trained teacher, curriculum designer, and Montessori educator who has recently relocated to Calgary from the United Kingdom. He is experienced in teaching history, philosophy, literature, writing, mathematics, science, and music. He holds an MA in Ancient World Studies, BA (Hons) in Philosophy and History (distinction for dissertation on Aristotle), trained in Montessori (Montessori Diploma, “Commended”) and narrative history (History at Our House).

Physical Education

April Borotsik has been teaching middle school physical education and sciences for 18 years. She obtained her Bachelor of Education from Dickinson State University, North Dakota, where she played University volleyball and softball. She has a passion for teaching physical education and connecting with students. Her goal in the classroom is to develop students who have strong moral character, physical literacy, integrity and resilience. The benefits of physical fitness and activity helps in all realms of school life to produce confident and healthy students. In her leisure time Mrs. Borotsik enjoys reading, outdoor activities and spending time with her family.

Grade 1

Kastyn Bowersock received her Bachelor of Education in 2017 from the University of Alberta. Since then, she has taught a variety of grades and subjects, including grades 5-12 FSL, high school social studies, and grades 3 and 5. Before becoming a teacher, she worked for seven years in aquatics, where she developed a passion for working with children. She enjoys sharing her love of learning with her students and strongly believes in the value of a knowledge-rich, liberal arts education. Outside of school, she volunteers providing infant and toddler sleep education and enjoys spending time outdoors with her family.

Music

Christopher Chamberlain is a music and humanities educator hailing from Windsor, Ontario. He completed a B.A. in music and education, both at his hometown university, and has involved himself in an eclectic mix of ensembles, including orchestras, musicals,  choirs, marching bands and rock bands. After teaching secondary school for a number of years in Toronto, Canada, he made the move out to Western Canada and has never looked back. With a particular interest in theology and sacred music, Christopher very much looks forward to sharing and preserving our rich musical history as a part of the illustrious CCA music department.

LIBRARY TECHNICIAN

Lu Chen earned her B.A. in Elementary Education in Beijing, China, and later earned a Master’s degree in Instructional Design, Development and Evaluation at Syracuse University. She completed her teaching practicum in Beijing as an elementary English language instructor, and has worked as Mandarin and fine arts instructor to elementary school-aged children in New York state. In addition to to her role as library technician and educational assistant, Ms. Chen is supporting the development of the school’s Mandarin language program. She is an avid cyclist, reader, and painter, and looks forward to helping children nurture a love of virtue and wisdom.

TUTOR

Proudly born and raised in Calgary, Andrew Chiacchia earned a bachelor's degree in history at the University of Calgary. He has over 20 years of experience in childhood development and instruction, working mostly with students in grades 7-12. Mr. Chiacchia has an extensive background in aquatics, swimming for the University of Calgary Jr Swim team (formerly the Dinos) and later returning to coach.  

He brings to the classroom the spirit of competition and team camaraderie in the hopes of driving students to greater achievement. His classes are upbeat, as he hopes to inspire the students with his passion for the material and his pool-deck voice. 

TUTOR

Catherine Chiu graduated from a traditional high school in the Lower Mainland in B.C. which focused on Philosophy, Apologetics, Latin and Classical Literature. After graduation, she pursued her studies in Linguistics at the University of British Columbia. There she also explored Biology, American Sign Language, and Psychology. She believes that education goes beyond the curriculum and is an instrument for growth in virtue, understanding, and logic. With over 5 years of tutoring experience in different academic fields, Ms. Chiu is equipped with the skills and virtues to enlighten and engage students of all ages. Outside of the classroom, Ms. Chiu enjoys listening to music, reading, studying languages, and spending time with her loved ones.

Grade 6 Humane Letters

Hailing from the City of Kawartha Lakes in Ontario, coming to Alberta by way of Toronto, he has a Bachelor of Arts in History and Philosophy from York University. He obtained a Bachelor of Education in 2018. Over the last 10 years in education, he has worked with Kindergarten students, all the way p to Grade 12, teaching subjects such as English as a Second Language, Math, Theology, Science and Physical Arts. Jacob loves to read Dostoyevsky, Tolstoy, and Christian literature. He loves foraging, hiking, fishing, powerlifting, jiu-jitsu, attending lectures, and having great conversations. He hopes that being from Ontario will not be held against him (too much).

TUTOR

Dr. Adam Dahmer hails from Kentucky, but spent much of his early adult life in Scotland. There, he earned a PhD in Celtic and Scottish Studies from the University of Edinburgh, specializing in the language and culture of the Scottish Gaels.

Adam has previously taught Scottish Gaelic at various institutions, including East Tennessee State University and Colaisde na Gàidhlig (the Gaelic College of Nova Scotia). He has also worked as a docent at Calgary's Heritage Park.

In his spare time, Adam enjoys singing, songwriting, dance calling, language studies, composing and decoding cryptic alphabets, and spending time with his lovely spouse, Dhanya. 

TEACHER
Grade 3

Christine DeBoer comes to Calgary Classical Academy with 20+ years of experience, teaching everything from grade 2 through grade 9. Ms. DeBoer earned her Bachelor of Arts, with a concentration in Social Studies, from Calvin University in Grand Rapids, Michigan. She went on to earn a Masters of Science in Education, with a focus on English Language Learners, from Cairn University in Langhorne, Pennsylvania. Ms. DeBoer is thrilled to be living in Calgary again after many years living abroad, including Guam, Brazil, and several locations in the United States. Outside of school, Ms. DeBoer enjoys traveling (favourite destinations being the UK and Netherlands), doing puzzles, and playing with her dog, Daisy.

LEARNING INTERVENTIONIST

Peter Deiter is an educator with over 30 years of teaching experience, ranging from grades one to ten. Originally from Calgary, he has a Bachelor of Education degree from the University of Calgary and a Business Diploma from Mount Royal College. Mr. Deiter has taught in public, private and charter schools in Alberta and in international schools in Casablanca (Morocco), Bamako (Mali) and Istanbul (Turkey). He is a passionate teacher of architectural rendering and history, and his interests lie in social service, literature, photography, travel, and foreign cinema. Mr. Deiter believes in lifelong learning, and that the pursuit of wisdom rests in seeking truth and beauty in the world, and in doing good for others.

Grade 1

Michelle D’Souza earned her Bachelor of Education degree from St. Mary’s University, and also holds a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology from Mount Royal University. She has always felt that her vocation was to become a teacher and help her students to grow in virtue. A returning teacher with the Classical Academy, she is excited continue sharing her love of learning with her young students, and create a classroom environment characterized by order, calm, and high expectations. Some of Ms. D’Souza’s interests include early childhood development, working with marginalized youth, baking, and coaching team sports.

EDUCATIONAL ASSISTANT

Olivia Duke is a recent graduate of St. John Choir Schola, which follows a classical education model. She has a special interest in Theology, Philosophy, Latin and Logic. She has eleven years of professional acting experience, as well as experience in assisting in teaching both at St. John Choir Schola and Holy Trinity Parish in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Miss Duke has a deep love and respect for tradition and its role in our world today.

Grade 5 Maths & Sciences, Drama

John Dyck has been an educator for 3 years. He started his education journey at Red Deer College where he received a diploma in Theatre Acting. The skills that he acquired from acting, directing, and working alongside dramaturges have informed his practice as an educator. He later completed a B.Comm with a minor in Drama from the University of Calgary, studying rhetoric, philosophy, and the relationships between jazz music and physics, as well as prayer and entropy. These experiences led John to St. Mary’s University, where he completed a Bachelor of Education. John is happy to be back in Calgary in a liberal arts setting, and he looks forward to building positive relationships with his students.

Grade 2

Originally from Ontario, Lindsay earned her Honours Bachelor of Science from the University of Toronto, specializing in Biochemistry. She went on to study education overseas in Melbourne, Australia, receiving her Graduate Diploma in Primary Education from LaTrobe University. Lindsay began her teaching career in England before making Alberta her permanent home. She has spent over a decade teaching the lower primary grades at prominent private and charter schools in Calgary. Outside school, Lindsay spends time with her husband chasing after their 3 young daughters, gardening and spending time in the Kootenays. She has a passion for children’s literature and enjoys discovering vintage edition books at random thrift sales. As a teacher, Lindsay loves to incorporate rich, classical stories into her lessons and feels these play a timeless role in character education.

TUTOR

Lucy was exposed to the classical curriculum in high school and went on to pursue it fully at Thomas Aquinas College, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in 2022. There, she developed a deep admiration for the Liberal Arts and enjoyed reflecting on the intelligibility of the universe expressed in law, mathematics, the natural sciences, music and logic. Besides reading all the great writings available on this, Lucy enjoys book clubs, being in nature, dance and family time. She believes that the natural wonder and receptivity of children is a very precious thing, nourished and fulfilled when provided with the good, true and beautiful.

TEACHER
Latin

Dr. David Foley holds an Honours B.A. in English Literature and Classical, Medieval, & Renaissance Studies (University of Saskatchewan), and an MA and PhD in Medieval Studies (University of Toronto). As a scholar, he specializes in the study of ancient manuscripts, editing and translating previously unprinted texts on theology and Biblical exegesis from the 12th and 13th centuries. It is his firm conviction that Latin is the master-key to the Western Tradition, and he delights to teach the subject, alongside the classical Trivium, to students of all ages.

LANGUAGE TUTOR

James Forbes' educational background is in History and Religious Studies, having completed a BA at the University of Lethbridge, MA at Queen's University, and PhD at the University of Calgary. He is passionate about helping students develop academic skills, having facilitated workshops on research and essay writing and taught as a part-time History instructor at several universities in Calgary and the Red Deer area. As a Language Tutor, James looks forward to helping students hone the English skills necessary to build a strong foundation for higher stages of learning.

Grade 5

While earning his first Bachelor’s degree, Mr. Gamboa had the opportunity to study some of the major works of the Western Canon. This inspired him to become an educator and an advocate of classical education. He grew up in a beautiful part of rural Mexico where encounters with the beauty and majesty of nature were a daily occurrence. He brings this aspect of his life experience to the classroom by nurturing students’ sense of awe and wonder at the world around them. Mr. Gamboa has experience teaching at all levels from K-12, and hopes to instil in his students a love of convivial conversation, literature, and the outdoors.

Middle School History

Catherine Gay graduated from McGill University with a Bachelor’s degree in History and Education. She has taught high school and middle school history, French, and Spanish as well as various primary grades for nineteen years. Ms. Gay enjoys English literature and philosophy,  both of which she has experience teaching through the Socratic Method. A passion for the classics, and for the truth and beauty they manifest, led her to Rome in 2004, where she studied philosophy, theology, and classical languages, earning a summa cum laude BA. Ms. Gay moved to Calgary ten years ago to work in the public school charter system.

Grade 1

Born and raised in Calgary, Janine Gorman holds a BA in Communication and Cultural Studies degree and a BEd degree from the University of Calgary. With over 15 years of teaching experience at both the elementary and middle school levels, she brings a depth of knowledge and a steadfast commitment to the intellectual and moral formation of young learners.

As a Learning Strategist, Mrs. Gorman partners with teachers to support the diverse needs of students, ensuring that each child is given the opportunity to flourish, both academically and in character. She is guided by the classical ideal that education is the cultivation of wisdom and virtue, and she believes strongly in the importance of modelling and teaching the virtues as a foundation for lifelong learning. Mrs. Gorman strives to create a learning environment rooted in mutual respect, curiosity, and joy. She finds great purpose supporting students in their formation and growth. In her free time, she enjoys literature and poetry, mountain biking, and spending time outdoors with her family.

Grade 3

Garrett Graham has been a teacher for six years and has taught children from kindergarten to Grade 8. He was born in Mississauga, Ontario. Mr. Graham studied philosophy and received a Bachelor of Thomistic Thought from St. Philip's Seminary as well as a Masters of Theological Studies conjointly from the University of Toronto/St. Augustine's Seminary. He has taught in both publicly funded and independent schools in Ontario, British Columbia and Alberta. He is excited to help form the literary moral imagination of his students through great books that speak to the human person, and to aid his students in encountering truth, goodness and beauty in his classroom.

ESL INSTRUCTOR

Meagan Hardy completed a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature and History at Memorial University of Newfoundland in 2013. Inspired by her passion for reading and writing, and wanting to share that passion, she completed a Bachelor of Education at the University of British Columbia in 2016. She began her teaching journey as an Education Assistant and Public Library staff and from there a new passion in Literacy Development evolved. A lifelong learner, Meagan continues to pursue her goal of creating a world of avid readers by completing course work in Structured Literacy and Phonics. Besides reading, Meagan also enjoys creating art and kayaking.

ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE
Voice

Born and raised in Calgary, Andrea Hill holds a Bachelor's of Music in Vocal Performance from McGill University, and a Master's of Music in Opera Performance from the University of Maryland. Andrea spent most of her career as a Mezzo Soprano based in Paris, and has been blessed to sing on the stages of Garnier Opera, Bastille Opera, Royal Opera House, the Metropolitan Opera, Teatro alla Scala, Aix-en-Provence, Tours Opera, Dijon Opera, and others. She has given many concerts and recitals with collaborative pianists, chamber ensembles, and orchestras in North America and Europe, and speaks French and German, Italian. Since returning home to Calgary, Andrea has established a teaching studio training children and adults in voice and piano, and is a member of the Mount Royal University Conservatory’s voice faculty.

Grade 2

Stella earned her bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from the University of Alberta in 2023, along with a bachelor of Arts in Communication from the University of Washington in 2015. Her teaching journey started as a Kindergarten teacher in South Korea, and she carried that passion for education all the way to Alberta. Stella has been a dedicated Student Teacher, Korean Language teacher, and Sunday School teacher, focusing on elementary school levels. Her heart brims with enthusiasm for crafting a warm and nurturing learning environment, where students acquire wisdom and knowledge to lead purposeful lives.

Latin

Dominik Kadlec’s deep interest in people and culture, along with his belief that language unlocks new worlds, inspired him to earn his Bachelor of Arts in linguistics from the University of Calgary. After that, he followed his love of language to the University of Lethbridge, where he completed a Master of Arts degree in Indigenous Studies, writing his thesis on a computational linguistic project to support the Blackfoot language. His love of world cultures and his interest in learning from various perspectives has inspired him to learn several languages including French, Spanish, Czech, Latin, Greek, Arabic, and Cree. Besides studying languages, Mr. Kadlec spends his spare time pursuing his interests in rock climbing, triathlon, camping, reading, film, and theology.

Grade 2

Lenka Kycak earned her Master of Arts Degree specializing in Literature and History from the Comenius University in Bratislava, Slovakia. Since moving to Calgary in 2005, she has taught various grades at the lower elementary level, including special education. Mrs. Kycak firmly believes in educating the whole person, mind and soul, and she looks forward to helping her students orient their lives toward truth, goodness, and beauty. In her leisure time, Mrs. Kycak enjoys literature, classical music, and an array of outdoor activities.

Physical Arts, Studio Arts

Lindsay Lavigne earned her BA in Psychology and her BEd from St. Mary’s University, along with a graduate certificate in Supporting and Enhancing Children’s Mental Health from the Werklund School of Education. Prior to joining Calgary Classical Academy, she spent nine years as an elementary school teacher. In her free time, she enjoys staying physically active, whether hiking outdoors or participating in various fitness activities, and expressing her creativity through painting. Lindsay incorporates her passions into her teaching to promote physical well-being and creative arts, empowering students to grow as thoughtful and engaged individuals. She aims to inspire students to embrace active, creative practices that cultivate self-discipline and persistence while fostering a lifelong love of learning.

Maths & Sciences

Michelle Lamb has over 20 years of professional teaching experience and has tutored privately for more than 35 years, working with students from kindergarten through adult. She is particularly passionate about breaking down barriers for students studying mathematics and has experience working in diverse settings, locally and abroad. She believes in eternal truths which are to be sought after wholeheartedly. Outside the classroom, Ms. Lamb enjoys family time outdoors, music, gardening and baking.

TUTOR

Kathleen Laurence is a classical high school graduate of the Chesterton Academy of St. Isidore. Her educational experience includes homeschool tutoring, working at formative summer camps for girls, and teaching catechism classes. She holds that an integrated understanding of theology, philosophy and history is very important in order to understand and best form the human soul. Grateful for the rich classical education she received, Miss Laurence is eager to pass that on as a tutor at CCA.

CHILDCARE SUPERVISOR
Currie Campus

Lorraine Lew has been an educator for 30 years. She grew up in Kingston, Ontario and obtained her Bachelor of Education degree at Queen’s University. Over the years, Mrs. Lew has taught students from kindergarten to grade 9 in subject areas of French, Art, Drama, Language Arts and General Homeroom Teacher. Most recently she taught kindergarten at a private school in Calgary for the past 7 years. Mrs. Lew is excited to be working with the kindergarteners and helping them develop a love of learning and fostering those essential foundational virtues in our young learners. During her leisure time, she enjoys walking, reading, photography, scrapbooking, and spending time with her husband and two daughters.

Grade 3

In the spirit of becoming a Renaissance woman, Anastassia earned a B.Sc. in Ecology, a B.Ed., and an M.Ed. from the University of Calgary, complemented by a minor in Visual Studies and Art History, a supplementary liberal arts program, graduate work in engineering, and a certificate from the business faculty. Anastassia is dedicated to inspiring her students to become lifelong learners and well-rounded individuals, versed and skilled in a variety of disciplines. She has three years of experience in middle and high school education, with a particular affinity for working with gifted and twice-exceptional (2e) students. Anastassia's diverse professional experiences include roles as an ecologist, outdoor educator, dance and drama teacher, and artist. Deeply passionate about folk arts, Anastassia spent a decade running the Calgary Folk Arts Council, a non-profit organization. Outside of teaching, she enjoys reading, painting, improv, yoga, exploring nature, and making music with her husband and children.

Grade 4

Craig MacFarlane earned his Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Education degrees from the University of Manitoba in 2014. Since that time he has experienced teaching all elementary and middle years levels, however, most of his teaching practice has been with Grade 4. Mr. MacFarlane believes that the purpose of education is to form the student’s character to will and to act in accordance with what they know. He is a firm believer in the saying, “You cannot give what you do not have,” which pushes him to strive for excellence and self-development, so that he can be the best teacher possible for his students. Mr. MacFarlane's intellectual and physical pursuits include studying history, politics, theology, and philosophy, as well as staying fit and active through weight training.

Betty Michalski recently earned her Bachelor of Education degree from St. Mary’s University after being inspired by the founding of Calgary Classical Academy. She holds a Bachelor of Nursing degree from Mount Royal University and worked as a Registered Nurse for over a decade, where patient education was a large part of her role. She looks forward to sharing her passion for lifelong learning and teaching virtues that will enrich students’ lives well beyond the classroom. Outside of school, Ms. Michalski enjoys spending time with her family, being active outdoors, and gardening.

Elsa Michel has close to 15 years of experience teaching English and French Language Arts, Literature and Composition, ESL, and FSL. She obtained her B.Ed. in Second Language Teaching (ESL) at McGill University, and later attended the University of Toronto (OISE), where she acquired qualifications to teach English and FSL. In 2014, Ms. Michel left teaching to study law at the University of Ottawa, where she graduated cum laude with her J.D. (juris doctor). After practicing law for 5 years, Ms. Michel decided to return to her first love, teaching. Having observed the deteriorating quality of education in Canadian schools over the last few years, she feels a moral obligation to put her skills and experience to good use in righting this wrong. She firmly believes that any education worth having must necessarily prepare students to become free and independent thinkers and truth seekers who cultivate excellence and virtue.

Grade 1

Pauline Miller has been an educator for nearly 30 years. After earning her B.Ed. in secondary education at the University of Alberta, she began her career teaching middle school students but soon discovered her true calling in the elementary classroom, where she fell in love with the curiosity, wonder, and unique perspectives of younger students. Pauline earned a master’s degree in School Administration from Gonzaga University and has spent the last six years serving as an Associate Principal at a prominent charter school in Calgary. She is excited to return to the classroom and re-engage with her greatest passion—teaching. Pauline considers it a privilege to help students excel academically while also inspiring them to become virtuous citizens. She especially treasures the opportunity to share great literature with her students and sometimes writes her own children’s stories, some of which have been published.

Outside of school, Pauline seeks beauty in nature. One of her favorite pastimes is biking with binoculars, delighting in the chance to spot birds and other wildlife.

TUTOR

Sean earned a Bachelor of Education in 1996 (Brandon U) and Master of Education (UofC) in 2005. He was teaching adult ESL, and providing e-learning administration to graduate students and university staff, for a 25+ year period before arriving at Calgary Classical Academy. Sean enjoys reading, listening to music, singing, acting, writing, and playing tennis and billiards.

Leigh-Anne O'Brien, originally from Nova Scotia, earned a BA in English Literature from St. Francis Xavier University and a BEd in Secondary Literature from Mount Allison University. Her teaching career has taken her across New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, New Zealand, and, since 1998, Calgary, Alberta. She has served as a core elementary teacher, middle school subject specialist, resource/learning support teacher, and learning leader.

 Outside of teaching, Ms. O'Brien glories in the beauty of nature, walking amongst the trees and local wildlife, and being in close proximity to water whenever possible - a lifelong affinity born from her formative years living next to the Atlantic Ocean. Delighted to begin this next chapter of her career at Calgary Classical Academy, Ms. O’Brien embodies a steadfast belief that each student holds inherent dignity and worth, to be cultivated in truth, beauty, and virtue.

Humane Letters, Latin & Grammar

Mr. O’Brien earned an Honours Degree in Philosophy from the University of Waterloo before completing a year of graduate studies in philosophy at the Dominican University College in Ottawa. He took a break from academics to work in the trades. He was an industrial electrician working in remote parts of northern Alberta and British Columbia. He returned to academics and earned his B.Ed. from St. Mary’s University here in Calgary. He has taught at Christ the Redeemer Schools for the past thirteen years, with the majority of his experience in upper elementary. Mr. O’Brien is also nearing the completion of a Master of Religious Education from Newman Theological College (Edmonton). 

He is thrilled to be joining the Classical Academy as it allows him to share his love for literature, sharing the vital lessons that can be learned vicariously through the triumphs and failings of rich characters.

Middle School Maths

Mitchell Orr is a recent graduate from the University of Lethbridge, receiving his Bachelor of Education at the end of 2021. He also has a degree in Biological Sciences from the University of Calgary. Mr. Orr has a passion for Mathematics while also recognizing its place in the context of other classical disciplines. He loves to share his passion of seeking truth in the natural world through this Mathematical lens with his students. Outside of the classroom, Mr. Orr likes to spend time in the great outdoors hiking and camping.

Lauren Park first discovered classical education in Phoenix, Arizona in 2018. What began as a chance encounter quickly (and surprisingly) turned into an all-consuming passion for teaching and working with students. While she began her career as a Studio Art instructor, Ms. Park's true passion is for animal behavior and biology. For the last several years she’s taught 7th Life Science and has loved every minute of it—she’s always on the lookout for cool classroom specimens! When she’s not teaching, Ms. Park enjoys many hobbies, including painting, exploring her new city, and hitting up the skate park.

Chris Pedersen has twelve years of experience as an educator spanning grades six to twelve. He grew up in Calgary and obtained a BA in History from the University of Calgary, a BEd from the University of British Columbia, and an MA in curriculum and pedagogy from the University of British Columbia. In his MA thesis, he applied an understanding of hermeneutics and dialogue to enrich an understanding of history education. His intellectual pursuits focus on the philosophy of history, theorizing pedagogy and curriculum, hermeneutics, and historical consciousness. Mr. Pedersen has taught in Vancouver, Montréal, and Calgary. Away from teaching, he loves trail running, backcountry skiing, mountain biking, travel, and chasing his kids.

Grade 3

Walter Reid has not only taught in the philosophy departments at McGill, McMaster, Syracuse, and the University of Calgary, but has also served as a kindergarten administrator. He has presented at over a dozen leading conferences internationally, earning fellowships at both the Master’s and Doctoral level from the Research Council of Canada. Walter holds graduate degrees in philosophy and ethics from the University of Calgary and McGill University. He recently graduated from St. Mary’s University with a Bachelor of Education degree. He adheres to Plato’s principle that intellectual pursuits must be coupled with rigorous physical training and is accordingly an avid practitioner of the martial arts. He especially enjoys helping emerging student athletes to find fulfillment in the ancient art of wrestling.

Meaghan Reisig recently earned her Bachelor of Education from the University of Calgary after completing a Bachelor of Arts with a major in Linguistics and a minor in History. She has experience teaching students in grades one to six and is looking forward to sharing her passion for truth, language, and the written word with her students. Ms. Reisig’s other interests include reading, yoga, singing, and spending time outdoors.

Katie Riddoch earned a B.Sc/B.Ed at the University of Lethbridge. She has experience teaching in a variety of settings, including in charter schools, public Catholic district schools, and in a classical homeschooling co-op. Katie has a natural ability to connect with children and a passion for teaching them to enjoy learning. She believes that weaving life lessons on virtue, truth, goodness and beauty into our curriculum is simple and essential to help our students grow into the best version of themselves. Outside of school, Ms. Riddoch enjoys exploring Fish Creek Park and playing with her three daughters.

LANGUAGE TUTOR

Maribel Rubin has worked in education for 25 years as an ESL teacher and curriculum developer in Mexico, Quebec, and Calgary. She spent the past eight years serving as an Educational Assistant, focusing particularly on students with reading difficulties. Educated in a Catholic classical school in Mexico, Mrs. Rubin holds a Bachelor of Arts degree, a Certificate in Teaching English from Cambridge University, as well as a Reading Intervention Certificate from The Reading Foundation. Driven by her passion for education and deep joy in working with children, Mrs. Rubin has also completed several online courses from the University of London and Hillsdale College. Outside of her professional life, Mrs. Rubin enjoys reading and spending time with her family outdoors.

Andrea Schoenberger is a graduate of Mount Royal University, where she obtained her Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education with a minor in the Humanities. While working to complete her undergraduate degree, Ms. Schoenberger worked as an Early Childhood Educator in various public education institutions. She has experience teaching in classrooms ranging from kindergarten to upper elementary, and some of her interests include fitness, dance, gardening, and various outdoor pursuits.

Physical Arts

Graham Schiebel holds a Bachelors degree in Health and Physical Education from Mount Royal University, as well as a Bachelors of Education from the University of Calgary. Throughout his youth he raced kayaks and was a national champion in the K4 1000m event. He discovered a love for teaching as he spent the last 17 years coaching youth in Sprint Racing Canoe/Kayak, helping to develop several national champions in and international-level paddlers. He believes in developing individuals who are able to move confidently and competently in a variety of different ways, providing a holistic foundation to a lifetime of being healthy and active. As a teacher Graham values integrity and effort, with a strong belief that the transferrable skills sport and athletics carry over into the world are invaluable to creating people of great character.

Ryan Scruggs is currently completing his PhD (ABD) from McGill University. His educational background includes a BA from the University of Calgary and an MA from McGill University in religious studies. He has eight years of teaching experience at the secondary and post-secondary levels. Mr. Scruggs’ interest in classical education grows out of his appreciation for ancient philosophical and religious traditions, with their emphasis on wisdom and virtue as a way of life leading to happiness. His own education has prepared him to teach broadly in the humanities, including philosophy, religious studies, history, literature, and Latin; he also enjoys leading students to wonder at the beauty and intelligibility of the universe expressed in mathematics and the natural sciences.

Andrew Siebert studied Philosophy and History at the University of Winnipeg, where he completed his B.A. and B.Ed. Mr. Siebert has taught Middle and Secondary humanities at public, private, and international schools, including Literature, Writing, Psychology, Economics, History, and Research. Mr. Siebert led outdoor adventure trips in the Republic of Georgia, founded the Tbilisi Debate Camp, and developed a passion for Socratic discussion. He believes that by cultivating the virtues of intellectual integrity and prudence, students discover that they are capable members of their community. Mr. Siebert enjoys the history of ideas, archaeology, climbing, and writing.

LIBRARY TECHNICIAN

Rachel Siebert joined the Currie campus as librarian in 2024. Mrs. Siebert tried to recover the classical education she missed as a child by studying classics, philosophy, and medieval history at the University of Winnipeg, graduating with an Honours BA in History in 2014. She has taught middle school English and history in an International School in the Republic of Georgia and has homeschooled her own four children. The latter experience, and the discovery of the educational philosophies of Charlotte Mason, prompted her to seriously begin searching for the most beautiful living literature, resulting in a 6000-volume classic children's library in her basement. Mrs. Siebert is convinced that it really does matter what our children spend their reading because stories feed our souls and educate our imaginations.

Elementary Music

Sandra Sims has had a dual career, first as a trained musician and now as an elementary school teacher. As a musician, Mrs. Sims earned degrees in piano performance, accompanying, and coaching from the University of Calgary and Westminster Choir College. Highlights of her musical career include singing with the Westminster Choir at the Lincoln Center in New York City, serving as an apprentice coach at the Canadian Opera Company, and performing as a piano soloist with the University of Calgary Orchestra. Mrs. Sims received her Bachelor’s degree in education from the University of Calgary in 2008, and since that time has taught students from grades K-6 in subjects as varied as music, physical education, reading, science, and general classroom. Mrs. Sims is excited about joining her two passions of music and education at the Calgary Classical Academy.

Grade 1

Georgia Snethun recently earned a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy and Theology from Thomas Aquinas College in Ojai, California. Miss Snethun also holds an Associate Diploma (ARCT) in Speech Arts & Drama from the Royal Conservatory of Music (Toronto), receiving the National Gold Medal for ARCT Performance in 2019. As a Speech Arts instructor, she helped students cultivate confident, expressive voices through diverse training including public speaking, interpretation and performance of literature and drama, improvisation, and even storytelling. Miss Snethun holds that the beauty of moral virtue is deepened and informed by contemplation, for when we see the truth, we love it and act by it (“veritatemagere” or “doing the truth”). When she’s not returning to Aristotle or Aquinas, Miss Snethun enjoys a riveting Socratic discussion, reading poetry aloud, playing cello, attempting accordion, and scrambling in the Rockies.

LANGUAGE TUTOR

Gabrielle Tonelli graduated from a French immersion program in high school and proceeded with a Bachelor of Arts in philosophy from the University of Alberta. After a year of working in an elementary school as an educational assistant supporting students with ADHD, autism and a variety of challenges, she decided to pursue a masters degree. She obtained a masters in philosophy from the university of Leuven in Belgium. With a concentration in medieval metaphysics, she is a natural fit for a classical education environment. Gabrielle is looking forward to joining the team as a language tutor.

Grade 4

Arvin Tonolete has been involved in youth leadership activities since starting post-secondary studies at the University of Toronto, where he earned a Bachelor of Commerce and Finance. Since graduating, he has been discovering the greatness of classical literature, regarding the works of Homer and Austen among his favourites. He obtained a Bachelor of Education from Ambrose University and worked as a teacher for four years before joining Calgary Classical Academy. He thoroughly enjoys physical and outdoor activities including various sports, hiking and snowboarding and is developing his artistic abilities through wood burning.

TUTOR

Magda holds a Master's degree in Interdisciplinary Humanities from Trinity Western University as well as a Bachelor's in Catholic Studies from Our Lady Seat of Wisdom College. Her academic interests include Shakespeare and Shakespearean stagecraft, Romantic Era poetry, and philosophical inquiries into friendship and aesthetics. She completed her grade ten in Speech Arts and Drama with the Royal Conservatory of Music and has ten years' experience coaching all ages in the wonders of performing arts. She is an avid hiker, enjoys fishing and paddling, and has a special fondness for folk music.

Kurt Ward-Theiss still remembers, as best he can, his first opera. “Peter Grimes” was performed in Vancouver January of 1995, with none other than Ben Heppner in the titular role. Anxious to get on with his career, he was born two months later and immediately started vocalizing. Homeschooling provided more opportunities for spontaneous singing, so it wasn’t until grade 7 that he enrolled in school, making up the lost time by spending 7 years at the University of British Columbia where acquired his first, second, and third degrees (“burns”, he calls them). And it was during his Master’s in Opera Performance that he met Ben Heppner, and sung in Peter Grimes with the Vancouver Symphony.

Erin Wallace holds a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature with a minor in Greek & Roman Studies from the University of Victoria, as well as a Bachelor of Education from the University of Calgary. She brings six years of experience as an elementary classroom teacher and seven years as a dance instructor, including several summers teaching in Geneva, Switzerland. Ms. Wallace is eager to bring her passion for working with children together with her love of movement, fitness, and dance to enrich the Physical Arts program at Calgary Classical Academy.

Jacquelyn Wiens holds a Bachelor of Education and Bachelor of Arts from the University of Lethbridge, as well as a Masters of Education from the University of Calgary. She has seven years of teaching experience at the elementary and middle school level. Mrs. Wiens grew up on a dairy farm in central Alberta and has lived in Calgary since 2011. Her interests include educational policy, stoic philosophy, and reading. She is excited to stand on the shoulders of giants and offer her students the good, the true, and the beautiful.

TUTOR

Emma Woodard is a graduate of St John’s Choir School, which follows a classical education. She has a passion for English literature and loves working with children. Emma has experience as a tutor for homeschooling children and teaches beginner and lower level piano lessons.

Fernanda Dominguez has a background in web development and knowledge in digital marketing. She enjoys creating digital art, travelling and spending time with family in her free time. She has offered her skills in graphic design to support various projects, most recently for a youth summer camp. Ms. Dominguez is excited to form a part of the support team for the Calgary Classical Academy.

Laurie Heather has over 30 years of experience in administration, and has spent the last 15 years working as a senior administrative/executive assistant in a charter school. She is passionate about education and making a difference in students’ lives. She spent several years volunteering on various school councils and boards, dedicating her time and skills to help provide educational resources to students and building community.

Kristine Klassen serves as the secretary at Calgary Classical Academy, where she brings her passion for serving others and supporting the school's mission to pursue what is true, good, and beautiful. With a background in communication studies and extensive experience in customer service, Kristine believes in a welcoming environment for students, staff, and parents, guided by the principle of dignity found in James 2:1-4.

A Calgary native, Jodean Ottenbreit graduated from Mount Royal College with a diploma in Recreation Management. She is a passionate proponent of quality education for their children, and is enthusiastic to be a part of the support team for Calgary Classical Academy. She has been active volunteering in various capacities with youth camps and clubs while raising her family. In addition to work and volunteering, Jodean enjoys spending time hiking and reading.

Nosheen Wasif earned her Bachelor of Commerce and later a Master of Commerce Degree with a major in Finance. She grew up immersed in athletics, playing sports like badminton and netball, as well as debating and public speaking. Nosheen has a passion for volunteering, supporting various schools as well as the Alberta Children’s Hospital for over 10 years. She has worked as a Library Assistant and Administrative Assistant for over six years, and is passionate about working with and for children. She loves to cook for her family and spend time with them. In her free time, she loves reading, crochet, knitting, and embroidery.
